Just curious, I looked into LT Headers and every shop around said not to bother because they will not pass RI state inspections. Is it because the O2 sensors are too far back and give a bad reading? I had to install O2 extenders just to get my High Flow cats to pass.

Well, that explains it, I thought it was another New England thing. I think our emissions people here will not be happy until we are all driving Toyota Prius's.
So how do all the people running LTH's get their cars inspected, or don't they?

We don't have emissions testing where I live so that makes it easy. States that have only OBDII and no visual can probably still pass. It's when you have a visual inspection that they get you.

We have emissions testing where I live. It`s not illegal to run LT`s,but you`re suppose to have cats.As long as the car doesn`t throw codes we`ll pass.

Yeah...here in TX we do not have visual inspection. If you pass OBD2... you pass inspection. I passed with Long Tubes.

Well it's illegal to smoke weed by Federal law, but the State of California says it's legal in certain circumstances? Get the car inspected, then put the long tubes on...you might be able to get a two year tag or longer...if all else fails come to Florida, our state law says cats just have to be replaced with "equal", nothing about headers...leave the weed at home though, we have the toughest laws on that in the union...

Here in Va I have never heard of anyone failing simply because they have LTs, but if you throw a code that's a different story. Some counties in Va don't even have emissions inspections at all so thoes guys get by with no cats and off road pipes.

Gotcha. I didn't know that LT's actually did anything with the cats, since you can keep the cats on.

My delimma is that I want to buy back my GT, but my brother put LTH's on the car and he gets the inspection sticker in his own special way. He said he's gotten them legally before the CEL kept coming on.

When they do a visual inspection, is that something they do from the hood or under the car? Every inspection I've seen done on my cars they never get under the car.

It has been my understanding that anything can be replaced from the cats back.

Under Federal law, cats cannot be replaced unless they are defective and this must be well documented. Putting long tubes, shorter mid-pipe on because you want to is not technically legal. However, as stated most states do not bother with the visual even when they are supposed to, so if you pass the OBD test, you are normally o.k. Cats can never be removed legally, no matter what state you live in.

Mustangdave, so the cats are in the back of the vehicle? I always thought they were off the engine... I really know nothing about cars. I just care that they work.

Long tubes are illegal on any pollution-controlled vehicle. It's a federal law.
I've had my LT Kooks from the start. I wasn't aware they're are illegal. They've never did an under vehicle inspection. This winter I'm going back to OEM headers and mid pipe wtih oem cats. Once I switch back Kook LT headers catted x pipe will be up for sale if anyone is interested. Every year for inspection it's been stressful. I still have DTC codes showing up, especially p0172 and p0430.

I glad that I kept all my OEM equipment. Thanks for the info.
