I currently have the Mach 460 with an Alpine aftermarket stereo...I was just wondering how good the other aftermarket brands (Kenwood, Kicker, etc.) were...I found a couple of real good deals and just want to see if anybody has a setup like that. Thanks

Jl is a really good brand for subs. It has a really clean professional sound to it. If you want sound quality I would go with Jl or Rockford Fosgate but if your just looking for loudness kicker, sony, pioneer etc. would be your best bet. I had 2 10 inch Jl w1v2s with a 2 channel 300 Watt Rockford Fosgate amp. Im about to move that in my mustang in a couple of months. Hope this helps Good Luck :bigthumbsup

I would agree... JL does make some good audio equipment. I went a somewhat cheeper route and got a 12" Kicker in the trunk. I replaced the whole Mach 460 system with Polk speakers and tweeters. I got it runnin with a pioneer head unit and a couple of amps.
It will all depend on what you want out of your subs... if you just want other people to know that you have subs (or if you're a bit constipated) you can throw in just about any cheap sub and make a lot of noise and vibrations. But if you want add some nice depth to your car audio system then you need to pick your subs and amps carefully to match them up and get the right box for them/it. I would look at crutchfield.com for some info and reviews. They have a lot of info available on matching subs and amps and just car audio in general.

Also, was the sound quality bad with aftermarket stereo/subs/amp and Mach 460 speakers? I'm not trying to have unbelievable quality here, just more bass and generally powerful sound output...think I should replace the speakers?

yea JL is a good sub. I had a set of JL 10" dual voice coil subs that kicked like a mule! I ran them with a rockford phosgate punch 150. Worked really well. Before that, I had 1 kicker 10" sub running on a 2x50 malibu amp that was a really good setup for the cost. The kicker sub outlasted everything in the truck. Currently in my mustang I have a Kenwood DVD player, a phoenix gold amp 2x75 bridge mono pushing one 10" Orion Dual voice coil sub and Kenwood speakers for the doors and the back deck. For only one sub, it hits really hard and the bass lines pick up nicely from low's, mids, and highs.

I replaced all of my speakers so I can't really give you any feedback on the sound quality with a 460 and after market products.

If all you want is a bass boost and better SQ a single 10" sub with a 200-300 watt rms amp will be more than enough. The key is enclosure of the sub a single 10" in a correctly sized box will hit harder and sound better than a pair of 12" subs in a box too small. Our trunks air volume can't move the amount of air bigger subs need and the result is a ghetto blaster of distortion. I have a kicker comp 10" correct box and a kenwood single channel amp. If you want ill get a pic of my install and how much trunk space just one 10 with a correct sized box takes up.

the box i have my 10" sub in is not big at all. i don't know what the cubic feet of it is but it is about the size of a small rectangular laundry basket.

a person could always run a free air sub mounted into the frame of the backrest of the back seat. with a free air sub, you eliminate the need for a box because your trunk space is basically your box.

you wouldn't want to go to big because that is a lot of extra weight to haul around.

i can get you pics of my setup to to give you an idea of how small and simple it can be.

i would like to see a pic of it.

I personally don't really care for the stock 460 setup. I don't think the speakers sound good at all. I tried for a while with just adding a sub to the system and that helped but it still wasn't very good. So I replaced the whole system and I am much happier.

If you have the time/money I would replace the whole system. I think that if you start with adding or replacing some parts then you will just start to hear the difference and want to replace the rest eventually.

I wish I had the mach door tweets I want to get the enclosures but put some different speakers in them. I like sq over dbs now that im older just can't afford stereo upgrades right now.

I still have the door tweets and I think they are the only factory speaker left in the car and they work well.

Your setup is almost identical to mine. The only difference is my box isnt ported/band pass like yours. For one sub, they don't sound bad at all. Its plenty for me.
Agreed. It hits hard enough to rattle change in my cup holder and that's good enough for me nowadays lol now 10 years ago when I was pushing dual RF DVC's and phoenix gold amps with 1.5 farad cap optima trunk mounted battery and was trying to get into the 160 db range id have scoffed at a single 10. Sometimes its good to grow up. Lol

yea i agree. i am completely content with my system. sometimes i would rather listen to the exhaust note then a bass line but with my setup i can have the best of both worlds:winks.

back in the day, my brother and i would enter contests with his car or bronco, which ever one he had at the time. we had 8 12" Orion in a bass reflex box in an oldsmobile delta 88 and then transferred that system into a bronco. **** would rattle your fillings out of your teeth.

Awesome guys that helps a lot. I agree with el barto, knowing me I will replace the whole system at some point, though so far I am happy with the Mach tweeters, I think a complete replacement would be great. And I think going with one sub in box would definitely be better given the trunk size and weight issues. I just wanna make sure I can feel music thump in the seats!

And what would you recommend, a single-voice or dual?

One sub there really isn't a need for dual voice as honestly that's just so you have more ways of wiring the speaker to the amp. My entire set up was less than 400 dollars with installation kit because I kept it simple. Now if I wanted to get silly with it I would have gotten a premium sub with like a phoenix gold or mcintosh amp and blah blah. No need for what you are looking for out of your subwoofer.
