Hey guys,

So after replacing the water pump and thermostat, etc. I have been trying to watch the radiator fan. I haven't seen it come on yet, after idling for 20 minutes, after idling for 10 and driving around the block a few times...

Is it possible that it just hasn't gotten hot enough to turn on? I just don't want to really taker her out and have her overheat again and blow a hose or damage the engine.

What's the best way to check to see if the fan is in fact ok, or if I need to replace it or find an electrical issue?

Thanks in advance,

David

is your car heating up properly? If not that could cause the issue.

take some test leads from your positive and negative batt. terminals and connect it directly to the fan and see if it comes on. If not then chances are you just need to replace the relay.

some electric fan set ups are adjustable so the temp it kicks on can vary. Make sure you have yours set up right. also i hope you have an aftermarket temp gauge telling you what your engine is running at. the gauges from factory arent as accurate. good luck

Temperature switch

The temperature switch sensing the water temp is what turns the fan on. The switch is open when the temperature is low, it closes when the temperature hits a set temperature. Mine is set to activate at the 170 degree mark. If you jumper this, the fan should turn on as soon as power is applied.

I was having the same problem. I went to Harbor Freight and bought an inexpensive infared (sp) thermometer. My fan would work when I hooked it direct, but didn't seem to turn on using the temperature sensor. Found out the sensor was bad when it still hadn't turned on at 210*. The company sent a replacement based on my readings, now works well.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the replies. I was bummed because nobody had responded yet, and I haven't been to the forum until now - I was surprised to see a bunch of responses (I must not have clicked the button to get an e-mail notification like I always do).

Anyway, I will check out some of the things you all said tomorrow. I have heard of hooking it up directly to the battery - never done it, so I'll have to figure that out... and buy a set of jumpers.

As for what temp I have it set to come on at, couldn't tell you. I bought this mustang about a month ago and I haven't done anything to it. I'll search the net for an answer, but how do you typically adjust the temp for this?

The new thermostat is 180*, so I imagine the temp got up to at least 190-200, fan didn't turn on, even when idling.

I'll get back with what I find out.

Thanks again,

David

if it has an electric fan then it's aftermarket. If it's a cheap one then it could simply be activated by a secondary temp sensor. Look for one screwed into either the intake manifold or the thermostat housing.

it was also mentioned that you could try jumping the relay. This is a good idea as long as you know where to jump.

Jumpers are pretty easy. All you really need is a couple pieces of wire. Clamp on some alligator teeth if you want to get fancy with it.

Hey All,

Thanks for everyone for the suggestions, a little testing showed that I had a loose wire in between the relay and the temp sensor. Easy fix, just wanted to post it to say thanks and in case anyone else searches for this topic there was a resolution of some sort!

Thanks,

David

Now the you have it figured out, a cool thing to do in my opinion might be wire a little LED light after the relay so when it turns in, so does the light inside on the dash somewhere, just might be cool :D good luck with it!

Hey! I was tryin to test my fan too. I have a question though. Mines a 05 v6 mustang. The fan had 3 pins, and I know of one was surely a negative outlet. There are 2 other pins, now I tested it with toching the positive to both pins, my fan rotates for one but doesnt for the other. So is my fan broken or is that normal for it not to work on one?
