Help please?! gas tank leaking on 1999 Mustang V6 convertible
I just bought the car yesterday. Its a 99 canary yellow convertible. I got it from this hoakey place for 3 grand and it has a lot of problems... thought i could tackle them because my uncle is a mechanic.
anyway. I went to the gas station last night as soon as i got the car home and i put the filler in and set it to that auto thing where it turns off when its full. well after about 11 gallons went in, gasoline was going EVERYWHERE. there was a puddle about as big as the car there. it was coming from underneath the car near the right exhaust. anybody have a few pointers on what is wrong?
I called my dad and he said something about an O ring in the sending unit?
I've only driven about 80 miles on the tank of gas and my fuel thingy says i only have half a tank. it should at least be at 3/4.

Well the gas everywhere is probably because the gas went out the over flow. As for the gauge. Try putting a few gallons in and see what happens. If it goes to full you probably have a leak. Check to make sure your overflow hose is still atached to the tank/ filler neck.

I will recommend to buy a used tank at a junk yard. It will come with everything you need to plug and play........
good luck!!!

there is no such thing as an "overflow" on our gas tanks...if there were, we'd have a constant evap leak and the resulting check engine light. once you put the gas cap back on, the entire fuel system is completely sealed.
if the OP left the fuel filler on auto-fill mode, and it somehow didnt click off when the tank was full, then all the fuel would start spilling out of the filler neck.
inspect the rubber grommet between the filler neck and the fuel tank.
and, if you're leaking ANY fuel, 99% of the time you'll have a CEL on as well; if the leak is in the tank/filler neck, you'll have an evap leak,(P0442,P0455,or P0456) and if the leak is in one of the fuel lines, you'll have a lean code on both banks, (P0171 & P0174).
I bought the '99 35th anniversary edition the Tenth of November.. and just tonight I filled it up and had the exact same problem. I recently moved to Louisiana and have NO idea where I could find another tank. The Fire department said it was the seal from the pipe to the tank. Could I just replace that rubber? I don't really have the money to buy a "new" tank. I sure hope they arn't too expensive.
+1 on checking the seals. i have not a clue on what your gas tank is like, but on fox bodies there is a horizontal seam at the middle of the gas tank itself. do you have any seams on your tank? if you do, give em a check as i had my old tank leak out of the seam. (this is admitedly a shot in the dark on my part, as i know not a lot about non-fox stangs)
if youre going to check the car for fuel leaks yourself then obviously --BE CAREFUL--! but turn the car on and let it run while you inspect the fuel lines, spout, tank ect. the car should be on so that you have pressure in the fuel system that should start forcing gas out of any weak spots.

i had the gas spill problem too. it ended up being the rubber seal around the filler neck where it goes into the tank. picked up another one from the dealership for $25 and it took a little over an hour to install in my garage

fuel filler neck grommet is what you're looking for.
X2 on the grommet
The grommet part number is F8ZZ-9072-AC
You should expect to pay a max of about $14.00 at any local Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury dealer parts counter. Don`t let them charge you more. Check the filler tube itself also, when I did mine it had a black plastic wire loom material zip tied to the tube. When I removed that it had held the moisture and the tube was rusted through. It is a easy fix. G/L
