Default 1991 Mustang GT speedometer problem

Having problems getting speedometer to work. Replaced cable, replaced gear at end of cable. Speedometer seems to work because I could spin it with a drill. Has anybody else had a similar problem. Could the problem be in the transmission where the speedometer hooks to. The original gear was stripped (white gear).Replaced with (red gear) from Latemodel Restoration. My car supposedly has 3:73's. Only owned for a few months.

I presume you have a T5...

The internal gear is probably stripped out. The white gear is not a good mesh on these cars and will eventually ruin itself as well as the internal gear.

You should be able to "inspect" the bad gear by pulling the sending unit from the transmission and looking (and feeling) up inside the hole. The gear teeth should all be the same height. Those in the center of the gear should not be shallow and worn.

Unfortunately, to fix this, you will need to pull the transmission, remove the tail housing and replace the gear.

You should replace the original 8-tooth internal gear with a yellow 7-tooth gear. For a 3.73 and the yellow gear, you should have a red 21 tooth gear on your sending unit.
