Default A definitive solution to stumbling, hesitating, backfiring on acceleration?

hey all:

i've been reading for months now about the throttle hesitation, idle problems, surging rpms, detonation, and various other seemingly air/fuel related problems that seem to coincide with one another.

every time, the answer is clean the throttle body, TCS, idle control valve, MAF, check the plugs and wires, and a few other things, but ALWAYS with varying results. it seems that even after buying all new parts [the ones listed above] the problems can, and do, persist.

can anybody explain with certainty exactly what the problem is with the 1994/5 5.0???? are these problems the same with the 79-95 5.0 [or beginning with the fuel injected motors], or a function of something gone wrong with these two specific years?

is it a computer problem?

is it fuel delivery?

a timing problem?

is it electrical or fuel related?

WHAT IS THE DAG GUM PROBLEM!

I recently purchased a 1994 GT with 160k miles ['just broke in' as they say] and the car surges when i start it, bogs down horribly as if i'm driving with the e-brake on, backfires on take off for the first 10 minutes til it's warm, but that damn engine will rev to red with no problems! it's as if it would rather be at 5-6k rpms than anywhere else.

so back to my original question: is it some sort of design flaw, or just a littany of little annoyances that add up to one big pain in the ass til you figure out what it is??? i just want the damn car to run smoothly. is that too much to ask, Santa?

thanks folks!!!

Solution to stumbling and hesitating: know your limitations when drinking.

Solution to backfiring: don't eat the Texas recipe chili.

Now thats funny! But my 94 does not drink or eat Texas Chili.

However it does have some of the same behaviors as noted above.

I am beginning to think the best solution is a good carb, heads, headers, and ship all the computer stuff to a third world country.

The 94-95 computers do not adapt well to sensor age or most modifications. I been around and around trying to get those cars to perform or run correctly and it is usually easier and way cheaper to install a 89-93 computer. I would say 1 out of 5 of the 94-95 cars have this problem after they hit the 50k mile mark if not sooner if it is modified.

Well my car has done the "surge bog" since I bought it totally bone stock two years ago with 17k on it. I have some minor mods now and it still does it.Seems a little "cold blooded". It doesnt do it every time i start it. Seems like it does it pretty intermittently for me. I have a buddy also with a '95 5.0 with 170k and his seems to do it more.

hey im new to this form but not to mustangs, but i just turned 16 and my dad gave me our mustang,my problem is when i drive it normal its fine but if i floour it or try to roll on the throttle it will go to about 2500 and if im lucky 3000rpm.otherwise it just boggs down at WOT.But yesterday while it was running me and my dad unplugged the MAF sensor and it revved and sounded better than i've ever heard it.so that means i have a bad MAF sensor right?

The car is stock except for a M.S.D.blaster coil,M.S.D.8.5mm wires,M.S.D.dist. cap,M.S.D.rotor button,K&N filtercharger,and a flowmaster cat. back exaust.It also has a AODE trans.

you should try cleaning it before replacing it. Tons of people on here claim a MAF cleaning cleas all idle stumbling problems. search on it if you need to know how.

My 94 GT had been pinging on any kind of acceleration, and would fall flat on it's face at wide open throttle. Yesterday morning, I disassembled the Mass Air Flow Meter, cleaned the wires and the sample tube (fine layer of dark grey stuff). It runs like new now, and there is no stumble, or detonation at all.

I used to have a check engine light on then after i cleaned the MAF it just has never came back. Fell in love with my AODE 94GT. I'm at 171,000 miles.

im having the same problem with my car when i start it up. after i warm it up for awhile it runs great. if i go WOT it bogs for a lil then just huals ass with no problems. i scanned my car and i get the code 172 wich says the oxygen sensor is indicating that the right side of my car is running lean. and i was thinking that if i had a crappy MAF sensor it would effect the whole motor and not just the right side right?

update:

so far i've cleaned the MAF sensor [carb cleaner on a q tip], replaced the TFI module/plugs/wires, all in addition to a previous cleaning of the TB, IAC valve and TCS. all with little or no positive results. engine backfires and bogs down. the massive exhaust leak and elusive vacuum leak don't help matters!

next [after sealing up exhaust and fixing vacuum leak], is a new TPS sensor and who knows what else. i just want the thing to idle smoothly and not stumble/hesitate/backfire. from what i've read, going with a carb can introduce a different set of problems and i'm not up for swapping one problem for another!!!

ps: for some reason even though i've subscribed to this thread i don't receive an email when someone posts to it...gotta check on that.

Its hard to pin down without knowing what had been done to the car. What kind of mods have you made. Could be plugs, timming, could be the computer if you have modded the car.?
